"And then another small present she entrusted to him, a painted egg-one of those treasures of Kiev which mean so much to the people who decorate them with intricate designs.
...Never again did Amadeo speak of his father and mother. Never again did he speak of Kiev. The beautiful painted egg he placed within his sarcophagus without ever explaining its significance to me."

Blood and Gold
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"These fragile and beautiful eggs were kept for curing the sick, or for protection against the storm....
There was a beautiful custom about these decorated eggs, that as long as the custom was followed, as long as such eggs existed, then the world would be safe from the monster of evil who wanted always to come and devour all that was.
...That I had forgotten this custom seemed a shame and a warning of tragedy to come."

The Vampire Armand
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This incident was mentioned in both books and I found it rather interesting in looking at it from the point of view of the persons involved there.
Marius brought Amadeo to Kiev Rus to see the life he lived and the family he left behind after he was taken by the Tatars and sold away to Venice. Marius knew nothing about the egg. Amadeo kept everything to himself. I had to read both books again just to grasp the significance of the painted egg that Amadeo's mother gave him before he truly left (since I first read Blood and Gold this time).
At first, Amadeo is the only one I planned to make. But since I knew that Marius was there, I just couldn't pass him up. And I made his hair too long.^^;
Too pen-happy with this.
